Love Anorak Magazine!

– “ Anorak’s main philosophy is to encourage children to tap into their imagination, use their creativity and is here to amplify their voices. It has at the core of its offering a passion for words and images that challenge and stimulate.”-
“Hola
I am Cathy Olmedillas the founding editor of the happy mag for kids, Anorak. I have a confession to make: not only I love nerds but I am a nerd myself. A very proud nerd.
Six years ago, as I was wondering what I should call this kids magazine I had in mind, I was looking for words that evokes childhood. I thought about the things I used to wear as a kid. One thing that stayed in mind was my red anorak, which became really sticky when it rained. You may not be aware of this but Anorak in English is not only a word for a raincoat, it also means ‘nerd’. I didn’t need to look any further. Anorak was the perfect word.
I think most children are nerds. When you are a kid, obsessively collecting something like football cards, books, old coins, stamps comes naturally.
When I was a kid, it was postcards and Noddy books I used to collect and now it’s Silva C pottery and vintage kids books. About 10 years ago I had to give away my snowdomes collection because it had reached ridiculous proportions and it didn’t fit in our new flat! I still feel sad about that.
I have definitely passed on some nerdy genes to my son. He collects everything. Stamps with the help of his Grandma, football cards (League, World Cup and Euro), Famous Five books, keyrings, chocolate coin wraps (‘it’s my bank, Mummy!’). We have all done it and given the chance, we would do it again. I have a grown-up friend who collected Euro 2008 Panini stickers and swapped them with my then 6 year old son. Before you think ‘oh dear, that’s strange’, try it and you’ll see how satisfying it is!
Happy nerd’ing.”
